When a bag of 4 daffodil bulbs labeled 'Pink Charm' showed up at the dollar store in fall 2006, I paid the $2 and planted them in the bulb bed. At that price I didn't really expect them to be pink... at least not pink like the Narcissus cultivars 'Accent' or 'Salome' or 'Filly' had been in my Illinois garden. I just hoped they'd live long enough to make a few flowers of any color before disappearing the way so many daffodils do in Austin. Instead of disappearing, they've made flowers for 4 of the 5 springs they've been planted here. And although the small trumpets don't look pink right away, look what happens after the flower has been open for a day! {click to expand the photo and look into the heart}
Even a Coral narcissus is Pink enough to make me glad I took that $2 chance.

Nice! I don't really like pink daffodils although this one could sway me. Your tweet was so on target. I'm really glad for the bulbs this year. I did something I never do, bought a bunch cheap from a big box store thinking that if they only bloom one year it was still a deal. (I've had many a daffodil call it quits on me after a few years.) They're great this year. Now you've given me hope that they'll come back again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic dollar store find! That color is really lovely on white :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky find. It seems like when I find those $2 deals they never emerge. Whoo hoo
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic daffodil! Two colors in one flower.
ReplyDeleteYep, you never know what you are going to get with some of that dollar store stuff, but you got a bargain for $2. (I'm just now seeing the daffodil shoots in my garden, up about an inch or so.)
ReplyDeleteWell worth a couple bucks!! Still no bulbs for me...! But yours are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAnnie, They are delightful~Great find. I've discovered that other cities have better discount and big box stores;)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful when the bargain find works out? And it seems to, often enough to have us keep being tempted.
ReplyDeleteI planted some pink daffodils last fall andnow I can't wait for May. That's how long it will take for bloom up here.
ReplyDeleteI have some also and they do take a bit of time to 'pink up' just like a newborn. I find them a bit more mellow than bright yellow which tires the eyes after a bit. Glad you took a chance on these.
ReplyDeleteI love these "Pink Charms"! I planted several dozen a few years ago and ..so pretty in pink stands out!I'm in the southwest snowbirding but will return home soon passing through your state of Texas!
ReplyDeleteI think I have these. Mine are just emerging from the ground and when they open, I will see.
ReplyDeleteI have a few 'Pink Charms' in my garden, too, and I love the contrast with other daffodils. I'm a sucker for a bargain, too, Annie; I bought a big box of crocuses at Home Depot last fall. I hope they do as well as your bargain daffodils.
ReplyDeleteYou got more than your money's worth. I like the way the flower turns pink later on in the day. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThose are so pretty...I planted them too, I hope they look the same. You are ahead of us...I see mine poking up out there. Balisha
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! Every year I say I'm going to try some of those bulk ones: I've heard great results from gardeners who nabbed them at the dollar store. I'll watch for these next year.
